Abstract: Astrophysical indications that the fine structure constant has undergone a small time variation during the cosmological evolution are discussed within the framework of grand unified theories (GUTs). A connection to the symmetry breaking mechanism of the GUT gauge group will be discussed. A laboratory test of these astrophysical measurements is described. Finally we briefly study the implications of a time dependence of fundamental parameters for baryogenesis.
