HOME       GAURANG YODH       NOMINATIONS       PAST RECIPIENTS

Professor Yodh (1928-2019) was born in Ahmedabad, India. He earned his B.Sc. (Hon) at the University of Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1948, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1955. His research interests spanned particle physics and cosmic ray astrophysics. His contributions to the field include extracting rising proton-air cross sections from the analysis of cosmic ray data, developing early transition radiation detectors for particle detection, measuring time delays of hadrons in shower cores to deduce that the knee was associated with an increase of heavy components in cosmic rays, and developing continuously operating ground-based water Cherenkov gamma ray telescopes to study VHE gamma rays and search for sources of cosmic rays. His academic associations were with Stanford, TIFR, Carnegie Mellon, and Maryland before coming to UC Irvine. He was a Fellow of the American Physical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the UK Institute of Physics, and he was also a remarkably accomplished sitar player. In addition to the Yodh Prize, he and his wife established a yearly prize for the most outstanding experimental thesis student at the University of Chicago.
